It is quickly becoming the norm in smaller cities. More specifically, structured cabling is a building or office telecommunications and data cabling infrastructure that is composed of a number of standardized smaller components, hence structured. The smaller elements are called to as subsystems, of which there are five main types:
The Demarcation Point is the point at which the telephone company network ends and connects with the wiring at the individual premises.
Equipment or Telecommunications Rooms house equipment and wiring consolidation points which serve the users inside the building or grounds.
Vertical or Riser Cabling cable connections between the equipment and telecommunications rooms, so called because the rooms are typically on different floors.
Horizontal wiring can be IW (inside wiring) or Plenum Cabling which links telecommunications rooms to particular outlets or work areas on the floor, typically through the wire ways, conduits or ceiling spaces of each floor.
Work-Area Components connect end-user equipment to outlets of the horizontal cabling system.
All electronic equipment benefit from structured cabling. If you are building new construction, it’s best to install all your structured wiring before the drywall stage as it is significantly less expensive than retrofitting it at a later date. If you have a structured wiring system in place to fulfill these specific needs, you will be able to plug in your fax machine, telephones, internet connection and be ready to run your business. As technology changes, your structured wiring will be able to change with the times cheaper, quicker and easier traditional wiring could.
With structured cabling, when one component fails, your whole network won’t fail. The problem remains isolated until repaired, while the rest of your system remains operational.
